Our Philosophy

Menopause is thankfully becoming more talked about and less a taboo subject and it is about time as half of the population will transition through it and experience some of the many symptoms that go hand in hand with it. These symptoms occur as or hormones fluctuate, causing havoc in the body and therefore disrupt everyday life.

The menopause transition is not something that we should just have to deal with and we should not simply accept that our bodies will become weaker and that we have to do less. With some small lifestyle changes, there is usually no reason that we cannot keep doing what we love to do and stay strong, fit and healthy.

About the classes

Heavenly Resistance Training has been set up to support women going through perimenopause and into post menopause as it is never too late to begin your strength training journey. The class focuses mainly on strength training which increases metabolic rate, bone density, posture and stability as well as better blood pressure control and maintaining body composition. There is an element of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) within the sessions as this is fundamental for people at this stage of life. Not only does HIIT improve insulin sensitivity (allowing the body to use fuel for energy more efficiently), it also great for cardiovascular and metabolic health. During menopause and endurance training, cortisol (the stress hormone) rises, increasing inflammation, stress and also encourages the body to store fat, leading to more stress. HIIT pumps out our growth hormone which counteracts cortisol and breaks the cycle, allowing the body to produce lean muscle, reduce inflammation and stress.

The class is suitable for all fitness levels as there are options given to increase or reduce intensity. It is a comfortable, small class which aims to share of information to help us all through this next stage of our lives.

About me

My name is Karen Palmer and I am a dance scientist, strength and conditioning coach and researcher. I currently work with and train teachers in grass roots dance schools to help disseminate Dance Science principles, particularly supplementary training techniques, to maximise their young performers potential.

I hold a BA (Hons) Dance Education from the Royal Academy of Dance and an MSc Dance Science from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Prior to studying at the RAD, I performed in Italy and Germany before focussing on teaching young dancers in Ballet, Modern and Tap. Before undertaking my Masters at Trinity Laban, I was involved in and ran community and charity dance events. Throughout my time at Trinity Laban, I discovered an interest in academic research which I am keen to pursue and am soon to submit a study for publication on the benefits of passive heat source as an alternative for a warm-up.

I am passionate about supporting parents in the industry and through this I am currently on the Research Advisory Board of Dance Mama. I also have an interest in helping dancers work through the menopause transition in order to lengthen their careers, which led to completing a menopause training course. This training, coupled with the fact that I am also perimenopausal, puts me in a great position to train women who are in this new phase of their life as I can empathise with the highs and lows it brings. These group training sessions have been set up to support women and share knowledge for this next chapter in their life.
